Laminate Floor Maintenance Tips
Laminate floors provide such a large variety of patterns, styles, and colors that they are one of the most popular flooring choices around. Once you have made that choice it is beneficial to know how to maintain that new look.
Prevention
The best way to take care of scratches, dents, and dings is to prevent them. Small sticky felt pads are available in a variety of sizes to place on the bottom of all table and chair legs, as well as any other moveable items located on your floor. Scratches are frequently the result of tiny pieces of rock and sand which are tracked in on the bottoms of shoes and feet. Placing mats outside of any entrance doorway will reduce the amount of rock and sand that is tracked in. Provide rugs in front of sinks and tubs to avoid any water damage. Another prevention tip is to make sure you sweep or vacuum off the floor regularly to reduce the accumulation of debris. Be sure to clean up any spills immediately to prevent any damage or separation of the laminate material from liquid saturation.
Things to Avoid
The surface of laminate floors can be easily dulled through the use of abrasive cleaners, scouring products, or the use of steel wool to remove stains. If you are not sure about a product either look at its recommended use or ask a flooring specialist. Your floor is already finished and does not need any waxes, lacquers, or polishes applied to it. This could result in damaging your floor. Avoid using too much water or cleaner as this can result in a streaky appearance. Follow the directions and ratio recommended by the product manufacturer for best results.
How to Clean Your Laminate Floor
It is best to clean your floor regularly. To do this you will need to select a product which specifically states that it is for laminate floors. Typically they spray on to a soft cloth or dry mop and are then applied to the floor. Although we often think of mopping involving the use of a bucket filled with water and squeezing out the mop in it, it is important to avoid doing this! Excessive moisture can cause serious damage to your floor. Water may cause it to swell which would result in warping, delaminating (the separating of the materials which make up the floor), and separation along any joint lines. To remove stains the cleaner does not take care of first try applying a dry rough cloth and rubbing at the surface. If this does not work you may need to consult a flooring specialist about a commercial laminate floor cleaner.
