Whether it's selecting the appropriate paints to provide a sense of coziness to one room, or a brighter pallet to magnify cheerfulness in another, the do it yourselfer is a creative person at heart who feels a sense of accomplishment when the project is finished. At some point in time each person is baptised with holding their first paint brush, their first hammer, and hanging their first picture. There is a first time for everything. To begin any project in the home a person must first start with a can do mindset. As with any project undertaken at home the first step is to assess the scope of the project. Is installing your own floors doable? Absolutely. What is important in the assessment of the project is allotting the necessary time to complete the entire task. Often the time taken for preparation is underestimated, and the project will be hurried along making it seem hard. Is it hard? Not really. Before beginning the project of installing your own floors think about this strategy. Plan the project in increments. Here is an example.

On the first day of the project determine what course of action you will take to install your own floor in the kitchen. Currently in the kitchen there is a linoleum floor installed in the 1960s and its worn out. The plan is to install a new laminate wood style floor that will complement the new cabinets just replaced. Now, the first increment of the plan is to note that in order to accomplish the installation it will require removal of the stove and refrigerator. Time will need to be allotted for that. Where will these appliances be located while the floor is installed? Perhaps, moving them to the dinning room will work. After moving things to the side there is enough space, and the refrigerator can be plugged in there as well. The rule is to take a guess at how much time you think it will take, and then double it. Do not forget to include the time to unload the refrigerator prior to the move. Then, after plugging it into the dinning room receptacle, there is the time needed to restock the items. The next consideration is obtaining a hand cart to assist in moving the stove and refrigerator, along with a pad or two to prevent any scratches. Will the process involve one or two people? If someone is going to help then part of the plan is to schedule a day for them to be there. After clearing the kitchen the existing linoleum floor needs a cleaning to insure the dust and dirt from under the appliances is removed in preparation for the laminate.

Now that the strategy is thought through for the kitchen preparation the next increment in the process is obtaining the material to be installed. In this example a floating laminate floor of planks with tongues and grooves will be installed. Time needs to be spent shopping for the right product with budgetary and quality considerations. Basically, this kind of flooring will expand and contract with temperatures changes in the home, and it is essential that a quarter inch space around the perimeter is allotted for this process regardless of the manufacturer's name. Consideration of an underlayment, and what kind if needed will also be part of the preparation time. It is recommended that prior to undertaking installation that the entire process be viewed in one of several laminate flooring videos that are available on the internet. These video workshops will provide detail to the entire process. Installation of your own floors is doable, and not hard. Plan your time and the success is insured.
